Comments we would like to share: JACK'S ADOPTION BY A NOVICE by Jennifer Long and Jack FRIDAY, 14 SEP, 2007 I unexpectedly came across a situation where a harlequin macaw needed rescue quickly, The health department had gone in and removed lots of birds from a home where the owenre was unable to care for them. Many were starving and poorly cared for; some had died. So with little preparation or planning I said yes, to the first bird I'd ever had. Shortly after "Jack" showed up and I quickly realized I was out of my league and needed help and fast. She (Jack) was obviously stressed, terrified, confused, aggressive, ANGRY and really sad. So one of the first places I found myself was at Feathered Follies with Jack in tow. It had been a struggle to get her in the carrier and I had the bloody wounds to show for it. I was really concerned that I had bitten off more than I could chew and was quite worried about how stressed Jack seemed. Both of us were STRESSED OUT! Fortunately, Laurie Baker was at Feathered Follies that day. I told her my dilemma and that I was there for a wing clipping and bird supplies (everything -- as Jack had shown up with nothing). Laurie saw the battle wounds Jack had given me. Next thing I know, Laurie had Jack out of her carrier and was playing with her! She had Jack hanging upside down, cuddling in her arms and laughing! I couldn't believe the difference in this sad, sorry bird I had adopted shortly before. Laurie spent some time with us, proved that Jack was not some crazed bird and gave us the encouragement and advice we needed to set us on the right track. At the same time we were able to stock up on some great bird supplies, toys and other things essential to a happy parrot. I will never forget it ---- I really believe Laurie made all the difference in helping us to turn Jack into the happy healthy, affectionate, loveable goofball that she is today. Thanks, Laurie |
